A yellow-bordered card with ©2021, a set symbol and the letter E
Regulation mark E is the strongest clue: TCGdex shows it first on Shining Fates (Feb 19, 2021) and as the main mark of new sets until Fusion Strike (Nov 12, 2021). That’s the Sword & Shield series.
The other answers agree: a set symbol rather than a printed code means before March 31, 2023; a yellow border says the same; and ©2021 falls inside Sword & Shield’s run (Feb 2020 to Jan 2023). Result: Sword & Shield, 2021. Match the symbol against the 2021 sets on the sets page — Shining Fates, Battle Styles, Chilling Reign, Evolving Skies, Celebrations or Fusion Strike — to pin the exact set.
If an answer doesn’t fit (say, a grey border with mark E), the tool keeps the stronger clue, skips the weaker one and tells you which to look at again.

Cards before Sword & Shield (Feb 7, 2020) have no mark, and Basic Energy cards never do. Reprints can keep an older letter in a newer set.

How to use it
In 5 steps
- 1Hold the card face up under good light and look at the border and the very bottom edge.
- 2Answer what you can: border colour, the last year in the copyright line, and whether a set code or a small symbol sits beside the card number.
- 3Look for a single letter in a small box near the number (the regulation mark) and a round “Edition 1” stamp under the picture.
- 4If you can read a set code like PAL or MEW, type it — that pins the exact set.
- 5Read the era and years, then follow “What to check next” to the set checklist or the right guide.
Why these tells work
The card itself changed every few years, and the changes are printed on it. Wizards of the Coast published the English cards from January 1999 until Skyridge in May 2003, and its name sits in their copyright line. From EX Ruby & Sapphire on, the cards came from Pokémon USA and Nintendo of America instead.
The biggest modern change came with Scarlet & Violet on March 31, 2023: yellow borders turned grey, and the small set symbol gave way to a printed code such as SVI EN. Regulation marks arrived three years earlier with Sword & Shield, and because a new letter comes in about once a year, the letter is the quickest way to date a modern card.

How can I tell how old my Pokémon card is?
Check the border, the copyright line and the bottom edge. A yellow border means 1999 to early 2023 and a grey one 2023 or later; “Wizards” in the copyright line means 1999–2003; a regulation-mark letter dates modern cards: D–F Sword & Shield (2020–2023), G–I Scarlet & Violet (2023–2025), I–J Mega Evolution (2025 on).
When did Pokémon cards change from yellow to grey borders?
With the Scarlet & Violet expansion, released March 31, 2023. The Pokémon Company changed English cards to grey borders to match Japanese cards; the same change replaced set symbols with printed set and language codes like SVI EN.
Does “Wizards” on a Pokémon card mean it's valuable?
It means the card is from 1999–2003, when Wizards of the Coast published the English game. Age alone doesn't make it valuable — the exact card, its printing (1st Edition, Shadowless or Unlimited) and its condition decide that.
What does the letter in the box at the bottom of a Pokémon card mean?
It's the regulation mark, used to decide which cards are legal in Standard tournaments. English cards have carried one since Sword & Shield (February 7, 2020): D was the first, and a new letter arrives about once a year, up to J in 2026.
Why doesn't my Base Set card have a set symbol?
Base Set is the only main English set before 2023 printed without one; Scarlet & Violet and later cards print a set code instead. Base Set 2, a later reprint set from February 2000, does have a symbol, so a yellow-bordered card with no symbol points to the original Base Set.
